Why act?
Everyday violence is in our surroundings, while wars and conflicts are here and elsewhere.
Violence and destruction in the 21st century
22 regions in the world are at war and 36 other zones are occasionally the stage for conflicts.
See www.warnews.it (2003 statistics).
This is so despite all the efforts deployed by governments, NGOs, schools, religious institutions and many individuals and small groups.
Even where peace seems solid , for example in Switzerland and in Europe, too many acts of violence take place - and these acts are continuously on the rise. These take place against family members, againsit friends or colleagues, against all those we don't accept around us.
Is there a link between everyday violence and wars ?
Those that are shocked by persons who fight wars against others, are sometimes the same persons that consider everyday violence as normal, unavoidable, belonging to human nature, and thus acceptable to commit oneself.
Quiz:
And you? Do you think there's a link between feeling justified to fight a war against others and feeling justified in doing violence to a close one, or to a person considered indesirable, enervating, unjust, dishonouring? Post your answers on our Forum.
